Your First Pair: How to Choose Dance Shoes

Ballroom dance shoes

After a trial lesson, one of the questions we hear most often is, "Where should I buy shoes?"

Our answer might be a little unexpected. We tell people, "There's no need to rush."

At First, Everyday Shoes Are Enough

For your trial lesson and the first few visits, whatever you already have is fine ── thin-soled indoor shoes, or smart low-heeled pumps. The only conditions are that they won't scuff the floor and won't slip.

There's plenty of time to choose proper shoes once you've decided "I'd like to keep this up."

Talk to Us Once You've Decided to Continue

There is no substitute for trying dance shoes on before you choose. Shops that carry them have become scarce in recent years, so we order samples from the suppliers we work with and bring them to the studio for you.

When you start to think "it might be time for a pair," please mention it to a teacher or a member of staff. We will talk it through with you and arrange a pair to suit your level, the shape of your feet, and your budget.

At a Comfortable Pace

To enjoy dance over the long term, what matters most is simply "giving it a relaxed try" at first. There's no hurry with shoes or outfits ── you can put everything together little by little, enjoying it as you go.
